Tips/legal for buying a car in NZ
Discuss things such as legal requirements for buying/selling
What you should do BEFORE buying a car etc (having a brain fart atm, I had questions myself but can't remember them after a full day at uni )

Was thinking more along the lines of the legalities involved :lolz:

Such as buying a car with no wof or reg, eg buying a car that's 3months rego out and a month out wof wise etc

Buying a car that's dereg'd and the proper procedures involved etc

A dereg'd car is just any old item now. Transfer of ownership transfers the registration. No reg, no transfer. It's just like buying a big paperweight. Why would the govt care?

I thought you had to get something along the lines of a police check done to make sure its not wanted by the police and all that?
I'm sure there must be some kind of proper procedure you have to go through to make sure your not getting yourself into the shit

Dunno. Probably not a silly idea though. Motorcheck it with the VIN or chassis number (hopefully at least one still exists!!).

You need proof that you own the car and that it was registered on new zealand roads before, in my case I have a handwritten note signed and dated by the guy who cancelled the registration who was also the guy I bought it off and I also have the old rego tag from the window, been told that it is all I need :D

when you are looking at the car look for tags or plates if still there and ask do you mind if i ring the police now to see if it is stolen, it is cheaper to ring the police station and it is quick as they answer you right away, if the owner gets a little jumpy then walk away.
Project RS coming soon.

Don't know about NZ, but here we can send a text with the reg/plate number and get answer instantly who own the car.
Check it up with the papers in the car. If the papers/text and VIN matches it's 100% legit.
Unless the Vin plate have been swaped along with the plates/papers.
