Codes can only be checked when the warning light comes on while driving. Pull over somewhere safe and DO NOT SWITCH THE IGNITION OFF. If you do, the fault code is erased.

So with the engine still running and the ABS / antilock brake warning light on, roll the drivers seat as far forward as it will go. Open the right rear door and look under the drivers seat. You will notice a lump in the carpet in the front right corner. That's the ABS ECU, it's located under the carpet. There will be a flap or cutout in the carpet. Look through this hole, you may need a mirror. It lets you see a flashing LED inside the ABS ECU. Count the flashes.

0 (LED off) - Improper power line voltage or faulty harness
1 - Broken or shorted solenoid valve circuit(s) in hydraulic unit - left front wheel
2 - Broken or shorted solenoid valve circuit(s) in hydraulic unit - right front wheel
3 - Broken or shorted solenoid valve circuit(s) in hydraulic unit - right rear wheel
4 - Broken or shorted solenoid valve circuit(s) in hydraulic unit - left rear wheel
5 - Faulty wheel speed sensor - left front wheel
6 - Faulty wheel speed sensor - right front wheel
7 - Faulty wheel speed sensor - right rear wheel
8 - Faulty wheel speed sensor - left rear wheel
9 - Faulty motor and/or motor relay or broken or shorted harness circuit
10 - Faulty valve relay or broken or shorted harness circuit
16 - Faulty ABS control unit or G sensor or broken or shorted harness circuit

Note this applies to gen 1 Legacy only. Impreza and gen 2 Legacy have a different procedure and fault codes.

Also, only 1 code is shown at a time. Fix the code shown, re-test drive to confirm fault repair and to check for new codes.
