I thought I would post up a list of what engine options we have, with the combination of blocks, cranks etc.

BLOCKS - bore

EJ20 - 92mm
EJ22 - 97mm
EJ25 - 99.5mm

CRANKS - stroke

EJ20/22 - 75mm
EJ25 - 79mm

EJ20 block + EJ20 crank = 1.995L
EJ20 block + EJ25 crank = 2.101L - Needs custom rods
EJ22 block + EJ22 crank = 2.218L
EJ22 block + EJ25 crank = 2.336L - Needs custom rods
EJ25 block + EJ20 crank = 2.334L - Needs custom rods
EJ25 block + EJ25 crank = 2.458L

All very quick rough calculations.

Volume = pi (3.141...) x radius x radius x height x 4 cylinders.
Radius = 1/2 bore.
Height = stroke.

Now THIS is handy, and relevant.

Some good thoughts for making some frankenprojects there.

What about engine conversions? Such as putting a EJ25 into a VZ or Brighton (? whatever comes with a EJ22 standard). I've been thinking of a FrankenLegacy as an option if I turns out I can't afford to keep the Turbo DeFoz

Not sure what you mean Mat... If it has an EJ series engine any other EJ will fit. It's just wiring headaches after that.

Correct me if I'm wrong but one would need to use the heads that match the block?

Yeah, was wondering how much of a pain in the ass it would be to put a EJ25 into a VZ legacy and get it to run without having to go aftermarket computer powered. I'm hoping a EJ25 would be better on gas and better for towing things than my current monster.

I'm only looking at the powerplant. Getting it running is a whole different kettle of fish.

You can use 2.0 heads on a 2.5 block but not the other way around.

Just thinking, can you make an EJ22 DOHC from SOHC by swapping heads with a 20 or 25?

Yup, just fit 2.0 heads, or source 22B heads (not likely). Don't use 2.5 heads as the combustion chamber ends up being mushroom shaped. Only ever use heads from the same capacity engine or smaller, never larger.

Cool, and then there is the "making it work" part... putting an EJ22 block and EJ20 heads into a VZ would be easier than trying to make a brighton work with the dohc heads I'm guessing?

It will work fine. Just need the longer DOHC HT leads, new cambelt and tensioner, cambelt covers and you're away.

I had the same plan a few years back with my old 2.2. I just never got around to doing it. Story of my life really.

LOL I'm sure if you'd kept it it would have eventually happened Ryan...
Cheers for the valuable info though, I now have a contingency vehicle plan for if I can't afford to keep mine... Or something to put together once my brother sells his Terranno... I infected him with BF lust thanks to trademe and pics of Ryan's car 8-)

He's working unfortunately, One day I'll convince him to come along to a meet, will probably drag him to the GCP dyno day as a helper if I can make it worth his while :lol:
