Why shorten that costs money, use an auto bc shalf since the 6 speed and the autos are the same length? You have to remember that we are on tight budgets with our projects, well except for drunken, he just buys cars n a weekly basis lol (all jokes drunken)

I am looking at the whole six speed conversion and wanted some opinions on the BC Legacy five speed versus the Later Six speed, obviously the six speed is much Larger and weighs a lot more as well as does the rear 180 over the rear 160 differential. I have no information gathered yet on the U.S.D.M Legacy sport trans, I need to find out about it's diff and ratios. Obviously weight is a significant thing to overcome when considering performance, I am left wondering if The six speed is worth the weight gains, also is the original five speed a strong enough box for around 350 HP Engine. Is there RA gears that could be used? I really like my six speed STI and the only thing I do not like About my 22B is the five speed, but I would like some input here on strength and reliability of BC Legacy gearbox. I know we never had a problem with Trevor Crowes Legacy five speed Trans during races or rally's but I would like to hear your experiences and opinions and if there are good upgrades in gears front diff etc that I would be better to spend money on rather than complete six speed swap. It is going to be very expensive, heavier require finding a lot of parts. Also will have different bolt pattern to my early EJ20 and that will look a little out of place. Thoughts???

it all fits, we have ej25 with 6 speeds and just ej20 and a ez30 so all can be done in a BC or a BF for that matter

I HATE 6 SPEEDS!!!!
The ratios are too short, they are damn heavy, and the shifter bushes wear out super quick.

But, the 5 speeds aren't so great strength wise.
Maybe look at a price comparison between full 6 speed conversion and a PPG gearset for 5 speed? Good aussie company.

Damn, I love mine! With the torque of the H6, I'm in 5th at 40kph. 6th in flat 50k zones is common too, at about 1200rpm!

I like the six speed too but we are talking around $ 5000 or more for the conversion in parts, if I do the six speed it will be wheels, hubs ,brakes, shift linkage, clutch and axles and driveshaft etc plus weight gains of around 130 pounds, that is a fairly big number although I think I will have stripped that much off the car in AC comp lines etc and removing seat belt electrics and window electric regulators.
I must take a very hard look at the pros and cons of this conversion, the weight is a big one for me....

Ive put a 6 speed in my track car, tight fit in the bc but went in without sledge hammer mods, cost me $75 to get drive shaft shortened and balanced, welded a stud to gearbox for the lower starter motor, got a r160 3.9 lsd in at the moment that got rebuilt by Jason Leifting up in Auckland, the axles may let me down but wont find out till its back on the track, as for breaks I took my 2 pot and discs from the front and put them on the back and put 4 pots on the front with a break bias in place to compensate for larger discs in rear. Cost all up was 3k to buy and install the 6 speed, cant wait for first day on the track

Let me know how it all works out, I guess for me I also like to build my cars to look original and I am concerned how the match is on the bellhousing, I understand it all bolts up but my engine is the early four bolt engine/belhousing. I like things to look right as well, do you have any photos of yours?

no photos yet, the bottom 2 gearbox studs go in sweet and the top 2 as well, you just need to weld a stud for the lower mounting point for the starter motor, so it only the 2 side mounting point that stay empty.
