Here's a few more of the Cosworth engines, not on topic as such but I thought some of you would be interested in these race engines

So... I don't see any coolant thingies (galleries?) in that block (though i see them in the heads)... Does it not get cooling from coolant? Or is it all hidden away inside the block? Suppose that's the ultimate closed deck huh :P

At each end there's a big open hole, then small holes between the top of the cylinder liners, and then the small round holes on the outside of each liner.

Here is a photo of the forged piston it has the word ART under the pin. I know that was of interest when we were trying to figure what the engine was

I am thinking a little bit about what turbo to use On the legacy and I would like to try and use the IHI Vf34 It has the ball bearings and quicker spool up and I have read that it is a great turbo for the EJ20 engine flows 460cfm at 18 lbs boost which is target boost pressure. It spools faster than VF30 which is apparently Forester and earlier impreza STI Turbo........question is guys, will it fit with the Legacy water to air intercooler found on the Legacy. If not what will? I plan on doing headers and up pipe and hoping to
get unequal length for the good old sound they make. I
know this might all seem very confusing to some but I
want as much performance I can out of the old set up.
That's why I am going to run good pistons and rods, I will probably be lowering my HP expectations to 300to 325 HP at best but with light weight high strength internals and latest technology ECU available with probably one of the best tuners available doing the mapping, I think I can get there :) please let me know what turbos you have seen fitted with the legacy intercooler, that might be part of the decision, I have good solid specs on each of the turbos, next choice for me would be VF23 found on my 22B or vf30 non roller found on some 2.0 STI's

I adore my VF39, I really really do, same family as the 30 and 34. (very similar to the 30, and i think what you'll have in your STi - thrust bearing)

The later turbo outlets are about 2cm further rearwards than the old turbo's, so you might have to make a custom silicone hose for the WAIC.

The other issue is the 90º on the front of the turbo, you can either squeeze a silicone one on, or make a custom under the intake manifold intake. Up to you. Obviously i recommend the latter, as this is what they were doing on the rally BC's back in the day, and is superior :D

Ask possum bourne motorsport if the still have the moulds from the ones they used to make for the BC's :D

Why not keep it original-ish and run a TD05H? Awesome turbos!!

They certainly are, no issues with fitting, and the resonably high boost threshold is actually on par with a VF30 or 39.

I will talk to Possum Bournes regarding what they can do for intake. Thanks for the info. I will look into the TD05H also as an option. I will have to check into that a little further before making a final descision.

Sounds like this is a great choice as they are well priced also. I have had to do a lot of weekend work to keep this project going so the saving would be great. I'm getting a little burnt out! I really appreciate the input here on this forum. I have found the info quite helpful and generally accurate. I think I will use this Turbo it looks like a great turbo and very highly recommended for the EJ20 in my reference book!

9 hous spent porting the second set of heads today and I still have some changes to make to the factory ported ones. I will be Deshrouding the valves in the combustion chamber on both heads and also changing the factory porting around the valve seats. I think there will be 30 hours or more into these heads.

You may be able to see how I have changed the shape of the seat/port compared to the factory porting job. Next on the list will be three angle cut on the seats. We do all our valve jobs the old fashion way by hand with Kwik Way cutters!

man you have a cool job..

anyway, since you where all talking about EJ20G and shim-under-bucket heads, what about the fairly rare '95/'96 Ver2 STI-RA heads? they specifically had a higher red-line than the STI of the same vintage, redline at 7500 and bounced around 7850. i have these heads and they've seen 9k in anger on track, still pulling hard till around 8700. not saying its wise, but it seems a pretty tough valvetrain

and no, we don't mind all the pretty pictures :) cheers
